Is Waterproof Flooring Right for You?

Waterproof flooring is an important choice for many homeowners today. It could be that they have a basement home that is apt to take on moisture. They might also be looking for flooring for use in an outdoor space. Whatever the need, waterproof flooring can come in handy in many spaces.

The Difference Between Water Resistant and Waterproof Flooring

There is often some level of confusion when discussing waterproof flooring. Some people believe that water resistant flooring is just as good as waterproof. However, it’s not the same thing.

Water resistance means that your flooring will be able to stand up under water and moisture better than flooring that isn’t water resistant. However, the operative word here is “longer”. Most flooring is water resistant, including LVT, LVP, tile and laminate.

Waterproof, however, means that even in the event of a flood, you can simply dry off your flooring and reinstall it. Waterproof flooring will take on no permanent damage.

The Composition of Waterproof Flooring

Most waterproof flooring has an underlayment attached that is made of either cork or foam. It provides a waterproof insulation against sound, is resistant to mold and mildew naturally, and takes on some of the imperfections of the existing subfloor.

The core is the portion of the flooring that is waterproof. It is very stable and will neither expand nor contract, no matter how much water or moisture comes in contact with it. On top of the core layer is the design layer, in most cases consisting of vinyl. The resilience and durability of this layer means that you’ll see far fewer dents or chips.

Finally, the top layer is a wear layer that provides more durability and in most cases can even be used in commercial settings. The wear layer is also very easy to clean and it is also resistant to most stains.

Waterproof Flooring Is Better For Some Rooms Than Others

We have already talked about how waterproof floors are great for basements. But they are also perfect for bathrooms and laundry rooms. Either of these rooms is prone to flooding. All it takes is one burst pipe, and you might find that you need to replace all the flooring in that room.
